Actually, it just came in yesterday from repair and it had its warranty so it's good. When I went to the mail store to get it packaged the lady working there said she gets them every now and then. I really hope I don't have to deal with this problem again. What's even stranger is it has happened to me whenever I have recently completed a Bioshock game.

Perhaps the console believed that its life purpose was to allow you to play Bioshock and after you beat the game, it lost the will to live
Or maybe its just broken.

The console has a overheating problem. After a while, some whel, specially in the CPU, starts melting and eventually becomes problemating. Some modding guys install a cooling system, like assing some fans to the console or water cooling, to help preventing this.

And some people even say that MS didn't added some fans to the console to profit from the situation, since it has the monopolly of the restauration. Outside warranty, the price is fixed, even for minor fixes, so in most cases you end up paying too much for it.

This kind of conspiracy theory is pretty ludicrous. As if extending the standard warranty for that specific problem to three years, including existing owners in that extension, and investing in the masses of repairs they have to do is profitable at all, let alone more profitable than building the machine with slightly better cooling (which, you may notice, they are now doing).

The facts: Microsoft cut corners on the design to save costs, this stupid decision came back and bit them in the arse, and they had to spend a huge amount (see above) to contain an enormous PR disaster of their own making - the 360's crazy failure rate - lest it cost them more in lost sales.

Not to mention the fact that the solder they had to use is pretty crap anyway. Ever since people started banning the use of lead in solder, its been going downhill. Nothing is quite as good as the wonderful old-fashioned lead-tin solder.

Doesn't get them out of the fact that they did a poor job of regulating heat flow through the system though...

I never received any notification of an extended warranty, and I'm registered on the Xbox Live. I believe it was only one year.

Anyways, I remember that in the week of launch there already being sites that sold cooling solutions, all external, of course.

My first Xbox is a real mess. It was the second to break down, but it is the one that heats the most. I also had to re-lub all the moving parts on the disc drive before it broke. I couldn't identify the original lub they used, but when I opened the drive, there was almost none. I used WD-40 instead.

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message [triggered when any internal component fails].

True, because I was clearly talking about then and not, for example, your stated persisting with that belief now.

If only it had at the time been widely reported by literally every major gaming news outlet.

This really may come as a big shock to you, so I suggest you sit down: some people have a life outside the gaming world. July 2007, I believe I was on a village near the ocean, on holiday, without internet access. So please tell me this: imagine you have a big company that makes a change on one of you product's services. You don't have the contact of all of your costumers, but have a mailing list with a great part of them that you regularly use to promote your stuff. Knowing that not necessarelly all costumers pay attention to the dedicated media, and since you have that resource to contact directly a great part of your costumers at end, will you use it?
