Has anyone purchased Grand Theft Auto. Is it living up to all the hype, or should I wait till it is being resold as used and save a few bucks.

Well, from what I heard, it's a huge hit. I have a few friends who just WILL NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. Which gets on my nerves quite a bit.
However, I don't think you're going to really miss anything if you wait a while, although it might be a long wait.

If you liked GTA in the past, this is definitely something to get, but I'm not sure about those like me who are new to this type of game.
Maybe it's just too big for me, I'm not sure, but I find myself more likely to just follow along on the little missions they throw my way than to find something else to do.
That's just what I think *so far*, I've only played a couple of hours, so we'll see after a little while if it really opens up for me.

Well, I used to find GTA fun, until a little into Vice City when I got annoyed that there were never large changes in gameplay and the story being almost identical to the previous games. Looking online GTAIV seems to be the same with many minor changes that doesn't really change the game.

It's amazing. I've had the chance to play it at friends houses (I don't own a 360, and the PS3 is a joke), and it almost screams system-buy.
Then again, I'm somewhat biased. It's my hometown.

I'm having a lot of fun with it. Nothing revolutionary, but everything there is tight, elegant and considerate. A far better example of design than the sloppy, over-scoped shambles that was San Andreas.
Here the sandbox has been thought through as a whole, where in SA it was just a bunch of unfinished and entirely unrelated things crushed together. Anything fun in that game was accidental, while in this it's all by design.

Argh argh argh! I want GTA4 so bloody badly!! My friends who have it keep raving about it and it makes me jealous!! lol. But alas, I do not own a PS3 as of yet. And yes, I'm aware I can also play it on other consoles, but I must admit I'm a PS whore. Okay, maybe not a full-blown whore, but I digress... ;-)

It's a valid argument, I guess...
I know a Xbox360 fan who has GTAIV, and he always talks about how the Xbox360 version got a 9.9, whereas the PS3 version got a 10 (although different sources rate them differently, I guess).

The two games are identical but for the (supposedly fixed now) lockup issues on the PS3, and the PS3 version running at a lower native resolution. Since the PS3 isn't as good at upscaling anyway the difference is noticable, but it's hardly game-breaking. The 360 version also has achievements like every other game on the system, but that's no big deal.
I have the 360 version for two reasons:
#1: I prefer the 360 controller (never been a fan of the DualShock design)
#2: I don't have a PS3 yet anyway
If I did have a PS3, #1 would still stand though.

To each his own. :)
