View Full Version : Gamer Questions! -26- (Sorry, Songbird, but I took over this time :p)
I was wondering, it seems that on of the most obvious questions here wasn't yet made in these forums, and that would be "what is you favorite game?". But want to go a bit further, so I ask, what are your top 3 in each genre?

Ooh, someone's a big fan of Yuna..:D
Actually, yes xD
I'm a big fan on Final Fantasy X, but not so much in Final Fantasy X-2. Not that I hate her personality in FFX-2, but the part of from being a High Summoner and then become a pop singer, just kills the character out of her.
Not that I have anything against pop singers, but come on...
Other than that, I like her very much. The original concept and ther her evolution, her face and traces, the eye colours detail (I used to draw, btw).
The personality traits, once again, and the way they fit the plot.
An then the motives, the association with ibiscus and all the simbology around.
http://yunatribute.no.sapo.pt/cosplay/Yuna%20body.jpg
She is easilly on of my top characters.
Above her, and in the same game, is the kick-@ss Auron. Former priest, now warrior, that came back from the dead to help clean out the mess. Smart, calm and sharp-thonged. The awesome red coat and the sunglasses to cover his eyes. You simply got to love him. That is my top one.

Also, his theme music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4iwYgd9N3Y)! I find it awesome, it has been my ringtone for years.

Hahaha! Although we haven't had a new gamer question in awhile...
Let's just call this "don's Gamer Questions - #1" :D Songbird's got competition now :p
Why do these questions have to be so difficult to answer? There are too many good ones all the time! Even for series, I'll try to just pick one even if they're both about equal:
Platform (probably one of the most difficult ones here, especially for NES and SNES owners):
-Super Mario Bros. 3
-Donkey Kong Country 2
-Super Mario Galaxy 2
-you know what? I'm adding another game: How can I have forgotten Yoshi's Island?
RPG:
-Super Mario RPG
-Golden Sun: The Lost Age
-Pokemon! (I'll go with HeartGold this time because it combines the old and better with updated gameplay)
-if this was top 4, I'd include FF in here somewhere... hang on does Kingdom Hearts count!? Stupid category...
Racing:
-Star Wars Episode I Racer
-Mario Kart Wii
-wait, do I even have any other racing games?? I'll probably think of one later.
Fighting:
-Umm... Super Smash Bros.? I'll just pick all three because I can't think of any other fighting games I have.
Flying:
-Star Wars Rogue Squadron series (especially 2)
RTS:
-Battle for Middle Earth
-Battle for Middle Earth 2
-erm... SW Empire at War even though I've barely played it compared to BfME (which I'm still a relative n00b at even though I've had it since it came out and I love playing it. I guess RTS just isn't my strength lol)
Some more NES games that I have that I'm too lazy to make separate categories for:
-Fun House (loosely based on the game show; almost nobody seems to know about this game but it's SUPER addictive; I think it's playable on Nintendo 8 if anybody wants to try it... this game is like my sworn enemy of games that I try to beat every summer and fail every time)
-TMNT 2: The Arcade Game (fun beat-em-up)
-Ducktales and/or Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers
Edit:
I'll add a "games like Zelda" category like Swish's because I can't really think of which category they would otherwise go into (although I think all of mine are actually Zeldas):
-Majora's Mask
-Link's Awakening (the first Zelda game I ever owned and my first ever video game bought specifically for me, so how could I resist?)
-Ocarina of Time (slightly overhyped? Maybe... but I still love this game to bits)
Thou shalt dealt with the wrath that is Songbird. May God have mercy on thy soul..
Why wouldn't I have mercy on my own soul? :p

I'm going to put down my own genre definitions, many of whose terms will overlap with yours, but I reckon you'll get a feel for what I mean by the games I list. I should also point out that I take the view that being a genre's progenitor does not necessarily qualify a game as its best example.
Also, also, I have a hard time picking favourites from some lists (I've always said that if you actually have an answer to the question, "What's your favourite game?", you've not played enough games), so in those cases I'll be selecting the games which may otherwise not come up in this thread over the ones which receive universal praise.
Also, also, also, I might not stick to 3 each (though I'll try not to exceed that limit).
So basically, I'm ignoring all the rules you set. To the list!
Adventure:
- Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
- The Secret of Monkey Island
- Grim Fandango
Platform:
- Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
- Super Mario Galaxy
Horror Adventure:
- Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly
- Silent Hill 2
- Resident Evil (Gamecube remake)
Stealth:
- Hitman: Blood Money
- Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
JRPG:
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
- Chrono Trigger
- Xenosaga Episode III: Also sprach Zarathustra
3PS/FPS:
- Halo: Reach
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Gears of War 2
Fighting:
- Dead or Alive 4
- Street Fighter 4
- Soul Calibur II
Strategy:
- Advance Wars (any of them)
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Medieval II: Total War
Sandbox/RPG (you can't deny there's a lineage here):
- Crackdown
- Grand Theft Auto IV
- Fallout 3
Rail Shooter:
- Panzer Dragoon Orta
- LylatWars
- Rez
Vertical Shooter:
- Touhou Project (don't make me choose)
- Ikaruga
- Psyvariar
Things like Zelda
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
- Okami
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Honourable mentions that don't fit anywhere else as I've defined them, and/or would just be sat on their own in a genre I've otherwise neglected or simply not enjoyed:
- ICO
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Resident Evil 4
- Super Metroid
- Killer 7
- Geometry Wars 2
- Portal
- Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
- Ace Combat series (STOP MAKING ME CHOOSE)
- Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis (Xbox 360 - I can't speak for the Wii version)
And many more.
I've always said that if you actually have an answer to the question, "What's your favourite game?", you've not played enough games
Come to think of it, I don't thing anyone can really say that he/she has played enough games, there is always a good game that pass through us, whenever is for lack o time, or it is relativelly unkown, etc.
I aswer the question with FFX because it reaches to me in many levels, more than any game I played so far.
I support the so called "interactive story-telling".
I think we are in the beggining (it still has a long way to go) of a new chapter in story-telling. First came oral transmission of stories and through pictures, later came paper and books, much later came cinema and now technology grants us all new ways. And for me, FFX is my favorite game in the same way that LorR or the Aubrey–Maturin series are my favorite books or (Peter Jackson's) LotR are my favorite movies.
Can anyone say that he/she has seen enough movies or read enough books?

Well... I had my suspetions, I didn't meant to write "her" (or ever "him") but it came out.
If you're a boy, Songbird, I truly appologise, but if nothing else, the nickname always made me thought you were a girl (even if it is derived from a program).
At least around here, birds (except for birds of prey, crows, etc) are associated with love and love is generally themed by women. That was the main reason.
So... My instincts were correct? Or should I hide underground?
Edit: Looks like I got the silent treatment on this... and, or I really messed up, or we will never know...

Not only am I a girl, but I also run an organization called BirdWatch which monitors everything! If you think me being a girl is strange here is recorded video of ZanTV's true form when my gender was revealed! Dramatic footage over dramatic revelation! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1Y73sPHKxw)
It is true though, I never did specifically say that I'm female. However, many posts ago when some of us were telling each other why we choose to use our user names I did mention that my user name is the meaning of my actual name which is feminine; I don't know if there's a male version.
No DancingFlameDragon, I do not have a beard... :p
As far as my style of writing, ZanTV, I'm a little unsure how it's reads more masculine than feminine. I usually try to be funny because I love making people smile/laugh; we need all we can get. Not to mention I try to calm things down every now and then. Then I've read somewhere that girls are likely to use emotion icons more frequently than boys; although, I'm not sure if that's the case all of the time. Just do me a favor and don't beat yourself up okay?
And don, sorry for the late reply; I didn't mean to give you the impression that I was mad or anything. It's okay for you to come out of your safe place if your there; trust me, it wouldn't of done much anyways. Oh, and I'll answer you Gamer Question eventually. ;)

Actually, the admins have a capability that does let them change one word to another whenever said word is used.
And personally, I felt like Songbird's writing style always hinted at being feminine. Plus, I do remember the post about where one's screen name came from, and I do remember Songbird remarking about the feminine side, so yeah....
Although I don't recall that post you're referring to, I'm sure we would correct anyone who uses band instead of orchestra, no matter the gender of the commenter.

Lark: English unisex name derived from the bird name, itself ultimately from Old English lawcere, meaning songbird.
I'm not saying that's your real name, I'm just saying there is at least a gender-neutral name meaning "songbird."

Ehhhh....
As a non-native speaker, I undestand the troubles of "me" and "I". For example,
"It should have been me to be in de podium." or "It should have been I to be in de podium.". I've heard it both ways and get confused. But, "Me and Bob", isn't correct like that?
In "wouldn't of", I really don't get the trouble, nor I see where can be used. Separating, "would not of", doesn't make sense to me.
Swish
10-05-2010, 11:54 PM
Well so much for not derailing the topic.
The "me" and "I" thing is actually pretty simple. You use the same one as you otherwise would if you were just talking about yourself. So for example, since you would say, "I went to the store", and not, "Me went to the store", if you were just talking about yourself, you should say, "Bob and I went to the store", when describing your exciting storegoing adventures in Bob's company.
And yeah, "of" in that context - that is, after "would" or "should" or similar - is an eggcorn (http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/) of "have". There is no situation in which the phrase "would of" means anything.

The reason people will incorrectly write "would of" rather than "would have" is because, when spoken, "would have" is almost always abbreviated "would've" which is pronounced identically to the phrase "would of." Its use has apparently become so common that many people don't even realize that they're using the contraction "would've," but instead opt to write "would of" because that's what they assumed they were saying the whole time.
