One topic (http://videogameslive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15661) late. :o

But then again, I have to say this is probably a more appropriate section?

Why would anyone even THINK of not putting it in a MUSIC section?

Because the thread about the Symphonic Fantasies CD where this concert was mentioned was also in General Discussion.

the Symphonic Fantasies CD

Which is also music, no?

Poor judgement, I say... ;)

Meh, whatever. I think anyone can admit overlap is to be expected between the various Community Lounge forums. Anyways, are the live streams not supposed to be up and running until the concert starts? I just tried running them on my computer and none of them worked.

Could be a time zone mixup...

EDIT: They just announced it on the audio stream. An hour later than I expected...

EDIT 2: Just using the audio stream for now, video's not workng yet...

Ugh, the Star Fox section was terrible. They used a choir for the whole thing, and it didn't come across very well...

There is WAY too much *fluff* in this show. Why don't they just stick to the main melodies?

Frustrated the video stream isn't working... Its not been too bad so far, and the fact that they aren't using the traditional themes is a pleasant change! Still wish the video feed wasn't region locked to Germany...

and the fact that they aren't using the traditional themes is a pleasant change!

They're using almost NO traditional themes! In the 3 suites so far, 80 percent of the content was either an uber-rare selection or had a bunch of "artistic license" in it.

EDIT: I guess they think Final Fantasy's pseudo-classical style should be applied to everything.

This show sucks! They didn't even play Metroid's most recognizable theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHWwPeqC0fs&feature=related)!

The Pikmin segment used more primary melodies, but it was too powerful. Pikmin is supposed to be very mellow, which it was only at the end... :(

They're getting the idea with Galaxy, though to be fair that was orchestral before arrangement.

On a more general point, do they have an ominous latin chanting (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OminousLatinChanting) quota to fill or something? Do all these games really need it?

TurboChickenMan

Super Mario Galaxy was the best segment yet, although nowhere near the Smashing... Live! standard. A bit too much choir, though.

EDIT: It's almost impossible to f*** up Zelda. I wait with baited breath...

Everybody's totally fawning over this in a Neogaf thread. They've likely never heard, say, EVERY OTHER ORCHESTRAL VGM PERFORMANCE IN HISTORY...

Although, someone there requested the Giant's Theme from Majora's Mask. That could end up redeeming the entire show... -_-

EDIT: Twilight Princess' intro already has a choir in it. They REALLY can't f*** THAT up! (Or can they?)

The part I'm really curious about is the "battle" section. I don't think I've ever heard any orchestrated Zelda battle themes...

TurboChickenMan
09-23-2010, 07:52 PM
Some good Twilight Princess stuff happening!

EDIT: But they're making it go on way too long - stop the fluff!!! >_<

EDIT 2: And they used the main theme again as a bridge between segments. Last I heard, there were other Zeldas after the first one.

EDIT 3: Now they're giving the main theme a *dark* edge...

Unless you're somehow ahead of me by several minutes, this is 'Kokiri Forest' from Ocarina of Time.

Just saying.

Ack, I haven't played it in awhile. The two forest themes blended together in my head... :p

EDIT: Some relative filler now. (A pseudo Song Of Time - or is it Zelda's Lullaby? Like I said, I'm rusty...)

EDIT 2: A bit of a reprise from Kokiri now...

EDIT 3: Now they're losing me.

These people don't get VGM at all. It's supposed to be recognizable themes. Artistic license should be restricted to the arrangement, but they're cutting up the composition!

EDIT: It's basically all sludge after the main theme and Kokiri.

EDIT 2: My above statement stands. This show = pure s***.

EDIT 3: Add the encore to that pile. The show was fail.

In the interest of fairness I should point out that the Zelda suite also included Zelda's Lullaby (opening with a little nod to Hyrule Castle), Ganon's theme, the Dark World theme, and the standard context-sensitive battle music from Ocarina of Time. I didn't recognise a note of the rest of it though.

EDIT: And with the exception of fairly acceptable Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy (though the OST itself is substantially better in the latter case) segments, and a decent shot at the Wind Waker opening theme at the beginning of the encore, I agree it was a pretty weak show all round. The Metroid segment in particular was ridiculous.

Oh! I did, however, enjoy Hamauzu Masashi's Donkey Kong Country segment, for what it's worth. Authentic, though, it was not.

Oh yeah, I heard all that...

...ABOUT 1 SECOND OF EACH PIECE!!!!!!

What do they do right at the end of the show? Why, the main theme again, but with MOAR CHOIR.

EDIT: When your best segment is from a game released just a couple of years ago, you've got *issues*.

I saw it as their attempt to be like a Wagner or Strauss Neo-romantic piece, throwing too much fluff in.

Marios were good. The F-Zero was like what? Mute City was much faster.

I loved the Donkey Kong. Combine ideas used there with the one from Orchestral Game Concert version and I think you have gold there, and the Zelda was a little overcooked.

They threw too much dessert in the music and not enough potatoes. I was severely disappointed with Metroid.

Compared to how they did their Square-Enix concert, I was disappointed. Still worth the price of admission though. (Free.99)

BTW, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXTA00Yv2h4&fmt=18) is what I initially confused Kokiri with... XD
