I've been playing around with composing music for a while and I always think it's fun to hear what other's have written.

Here's my most recent song, Blue Earth:
Blue Earth Midi (http://kupax.com/files/10065_mmywg/Blue%20Earth.mid) - Mp3 (http://kupax.com/files/10069_ex0h8/Blue%20Earth.mp3)

The mp3 version is the the midi converted to mp3, so it sounds almost the same.

Another song that I wrote a year ago is:
Rushing Through Uncertainty (http://kupax.com/files/3648_rqiqy/Ocarina%20Assignment%201%20-%20Rushing%20Through%20Uncertainty.mid)

Anyone else want to share something that they've written?

Although I did a little composition for my GCSE Music exam, none of it was really any good (reflected in the C grade I got overall). The only piece that I've actually been proud of, and actually put quite a lot of work into was a relatively low level orchestral arrangement of Man with a Machine Gun from FF8. Its nothing amazing and was done entirely in Sibelius from a piano arrangement, but I think it sounds reasonably good, even with the poor quality midi instrumentation.
Listen Here (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/MWAMG_Orchestrated.mid) Its nothing amazing, but I like it. :D

Blue Earth is quite a nice little tune, quite reminiscent of the music from the original Age of Empires game! Definitely wouldn't sound completely out of place in something like that! Rushing sounds just like it should be in a Yahtzee Croshaw Chzo Mythos style game, though whether thats the MIDI instruments talking or the general feel of the piece, I'm not sure. Maybe ASCII should license it for use in RPG Maker whatever the latest one is :D

Funny that you mention RPG Maker because I've played around with a bit with that as well. Although, I haven't really made anything serious with it.

Your orchestration sounds pretty good! That's something I'd like to try sometime.

Thanks, its probably been at least 3 years since I made that, and I hadn't really done any arranging prior to that or any since, so for the complete lack of experience, I think it turned out okay!

And I must admit I've done some dabbling in RPG Maker too. At one point I did have something in the works that lasted probably just over an hour in playtime, but it took so long to build up, I think I changed versions of RPG Maker part way through, it just felt horribly disjointed because it would completely change style or whatever partway through because my style changed and I just had to abandon it because I ran out of time in which I could actually work on it. If I could find the time to dabble again, I definitely would, it was great fun doing it, it just required so much time and effort that it needs the utmost dedication to get anything good out of it... Shame really!

Here is something i wrote for a project for school: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ui95u9o1E0
Its really short though ive tried to add to it its just the new part doesn't exactly fit. Sometime soon im gonna write a longer piece but i dont have much time now. Im in 11th grade, that was written last year. Im pretty sure its impossible to actually play though.

here is something i wrote for one of my brothers media assignments, not strictly VG music but i guess i could be if it were longer.

original intention was a short intro for some sort of anime.

Yeah, I've been trying to learn everything about FL Studio for the past 8-9 months, taking just about every course offered, even private lessons over Skype from someone across the U.S.

Here's the first remix I've come up with posted here (http://videogameslive.com/forums/showthread.php?p=28758#post28758).

If I could just get one remix into OCRemix, I'd be happy. :P

I've been composing for qutie a few years now. I've been doing a lot of messing around with video game esque songs and am making a collection of a mock video game soundtrack.

Along with that I composed for one small flash project still in the works and am currently working on another point and click adventure flash title.

A few of my highlights can be found here:

Starcrossed (http://members.cox.net/trippen01/Starcrossed.mp3) This was one of my premier pieces I performed live in college on one of the saxophones. I had written it for a game that never got off the ground.

The Opening (Korg) (http://members.cox.net/jeff_anderson/The%20Opening%20(R)%20Korg.mp3) This next one is something I upgraded for another game that didn't work out. This one was done on a Yamaha and then converted for a Korg. It wasn't 100% completed.

First Mission ~ Flowing (http://members.cox.net/jeff_anderson/First%20Mission%20(Flowing).mp3) This is the starting area for that said game, although it's left on the Yamaha.

Turn The Tides (http://members.cox.net/jeff_anderson/Turn%20The%20Tides%20-%20Korg.mp3) almost reminds me of a couple Secret of Mana tracks. This was redone for Korg and was an exploring theme.

4-15-09 (http://members.cox.net/burnunit83/4-15-09%20(R).mp3) This one almost reminds me of a basic theme that would be a piano theme to Kingdom Hearts. Or atleast it's based on that idea.

April Nights (http://members.cox.net/burnunit83/April%20Nights.mp3) I'm a sax major and I performed this piano piece of my own creation for one of my last required performances. Needless to say I was nervous but pulled it off.

Nocturne In a Lonely Field (http://members.cox.net/burnunit83/Nocturne%20Original.mp3) Although the title is musically incorrenct as this is not really a Nocturne, it was the first theme I had written for a game ever. It was like how most the Final Fantasy games opened with text, this was used as the starting music behind it.

6-17-09 (http://members.cox.net/everydayfengshui/06-17-09%20(R).mp3) This is another just messing with the keyboard and making a theme from something off the top of my head.

Theme 4 (http://members.cox.net/everydayfengshui/Theme%204.mp3) A Piece I had to compose for my music class. It had to inclue a Neopolitian Chord.

I am sure I'm missing a few pieces. Please give opinions though. I put a lot of work into these, although not many are fully realized still. The thing you realize is a piece is never truly done. Also, if anyone has suggestions for names (or re-names) I'm happy to hear them. Thanks. I know it's a long list but it's short compared to everything I have.

Even though I still am no where near competent on the guitar, I have started to try to make my own music.

Here's a little sound clip on something I was working on earlier:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/mdktzn4ddgm/Sound%20clip%2086.mp4

I don't know why, but a lot of the stuff I improvise seems to sound very similar to music I've heard before. (When I was playing that, I get a weird dejavu feeling to it!)

EDIT: WOW! BurnUnit83 your music is really good!

I'm certainly no expert, but I think Turn the Tides might sound better if it used electric guitars (with some distortion to add a bit of depth), and heavier drums.

All the other music would fit very well in an RPG.
I could imagine it to be a JRPG, set in the present, with lots of drama and mystery.
Maybe you'd play as an inspector of some sort with a humble past, but a woeful present, (maybe has relationship issues with his wife, or is struggling to get noticed at work, or the place he's called home is falling into decay (literally, or socially)).

I'd think it would be awesome if he were to discover some sort of alternate dimesion or something, where the tone and style of the music is different, (as well as the graphics).
Then he continues to be drawn to this world, despite his strong feelings of responsibility to his family and his badge, as in this world, he is the hero, and people depend on him more outwardly, and celebrate his successes.

Eventually, he has to decide whether to save the "real" world that he came from, or the "fantasy" world that appeals to him (even though there is no garuntee that this world could last. Probably something to do with magic causing decay).
A conflict between heart and head.

Turbo852:

Thanks for the compliment. What's something you may learn is that you can work with something for years and never truly be done. That's the best part of when you play and improvise, you add facets to it. You may play it one way the first time, and add that little flair or more the second time.

I have some changes in mind for a few and changing the guitar for turn the tides could work. As for the drums, a little harder to pull off with the Korg at the moment as I have not fully mastered it. Turn the Tides also reminds me of a few pieces from Secret of Mana.

I do like the sample you have as well. I can see that being the opening to a game. A nice dusty highway somewhere as you wait for a car to pass. Then go into something more.

Everything posted here by everyone so far has been a good sound. We just need a game to score for and we could end up in VGL ourselves one day.

When I get a chance, I'll post more feedback on other clips. =)

Burnunit: All of your new songs are really great!

I really liked the sounds in Starcrossed. I think it would fit very well in an rpg. It sounds like it would be good for a cutscene taking place at night.

First Mission Opening reminds me a little of some Final Fantasy music. Specifically Final Fantasy IV. I like the saxophone! I played alto back in high school.

Turn the Tides almost sounds like it would be good for a minigame. Maybe a beach carnival?

4-15 is definitely reminiscent of Secret of Mana. I like the haunting feel it has.

The Opening sounds like a good rpg theme. Possibly to tell of some terrible event. I can hear a voice narrating a story over this as well. This one is quite good! I especially like the use of bells.

Nocturne Original sounds like a love theme or like it could be a character theme for a girl that the protagonist likes.

April Nights sounds pretty good. It makes me think of a candle-lit table in a wooden house. It is evening and the moon is out, but there are some clouds.

Theme 4 makes me think of a sad event like a character dying or some other tragedy. The hero is having a flashback maybe? And is remembering what s/he is fighting for. I think this is one of my favorites!

6-17 has a nice ominous feel to it. Kind of like a mystery though. It also seems to tell a story that might take place inside a cave. It is very dangerous, but it cannot be avoided.

Retrovortex: Nice! It sounds like a good almost-adventure-like song.

I recently wrote a few short loopable songs. They are just short simple midis that could be looped forever. Here are clips of them looped 4 times:

I had an idea to try to remix M. Bison's theme (originally in SF2)...in more of the style that was presented in Street Fighter IV, like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7QMxMmCpfQ&fmt=18).

But after watching Mission Impossible and seeing just how close the theme was to...say, Zelda 2: Temple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsLCkhWpBLg) or Hyrule Temple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSmEq3pVceE) in Super Smash Bros...I started working on a new project entirely...heh.

Well, at the moment I'm writing a musical. I don't have anything recorded on my computer that I wrote. I'm also the leader of a barbershop quartet and a theater troop that sings solos to 8 part harmonies with a band, so if anyone wants us to perform anything they wrote I'd be happy to suggest it to the groups. And I'll try and get some compositions or arrangements I wrote myself or with my partner.

You considered the possibility of using Google Translate to beatbox (http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/29/google-beatbox/) over your songs?

But, I could record all the sounds separately and turn it into a sample pack, then just call it Googbox. I'm sure it'd be popular *cough*.

I think they key is to get the right instrument. I love the Korg but it became so difficult to write in the style I wish (methods with cakewalk, etc) I wish I hadn't switched them out sometimes. So, I tell you if you get discouraged or something, try out some other keyboards and instruments, ask questions and you shall find your path.

With luck, I should be back in business here soon.

*edit* Not to say the Korg is bad but it's a better performance machine than a composition box. =) Still love it.

I agree. My $300 Yamaha was easier to use than my Korg with composing.

I want the newer Yamaha, but I fear these expensive but nice sounding ones may end up the same.

Maybe get a cheap to compose then use the expensive to finish off and produce the final number.

Seconding this.

I can't think of any situation where two cheap plasticky doodads would be able to achieve anything that one expensve weighted-keyed macguffin couldn't. Though obviously you need to take into account portability if that's something you want from a keyboard, you can get plenty of actually nice ones for that purpose.

I dabble in composing but mostly I do a lot of solo guitar arrangements of video game music. I'll post a couple though if you're interested.

The Mad Man's Lament: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XmF-_YBbAU
We had to write a piece of music in one hour based on a theme given at the beginning of that hour. The theme was horror/creepy music.

To The Stars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg-814mol0Q
Another little forum contest, we had to come up with a piece of music that told a story. Mine was in honor of the Challenger flight crew and told the story of them finally making it into space.

Yeah Swish, those are pretty legit. :p

On an unrelated sidenote, I had a feeling that the person who posted after me was a spambot...guess I was right. xD

Why exactly would anyone suck up to me?

Hey KGB525, I went to your website, and I realized that I sort of know you in real life. I probably only met you once, but I know your older brother. He's good friends with my two sisters. Anyway, I saw you and him play a concert at Hell's Kitchen a while back.

It's funny, because it wasn't your name that gave it away, it was that you were in Apartment 4, which I remember him advertising.

Anyway, I'll give your albums a listen.

Oh now don't put too much thought into it or you'll ruin the moment. Plus I gave you a wink, I bet you don't get those often. ;)

I'm hurt.

Also, just got round to listening to Sonicesque. Awesome work, particularly on Vol. II. Really captured the style, but still made it your own.

I make up lots of little songs in my head... particularly while driving hah! I have written several lyrical songs and even recorded a few while at college, taking a composing and arranging course. Cannot find the CD they are stored on at the moment :/ But someday soon, will upload. Don't really know if any of them would work in a VG though hah! AS for the driving songs, THOSE could possibly work, but they're all just my humming to myself and I don't exactly write them down! I composed a few bits for characters in a novel I'm writing, like what their "theme" would be when they showed up on screen in the movie version.. Sorry, i'm a big dreamer! hehehehe!

Anyway, all the stuff on here has been fantastic. Keep it coming!

Personally, the shift between the soft and the loud early on is quite annoying (and possibly painful for anyone wearing headphones). Once you get past the early section, though, I think it's much better.

Duly noted Brainiac...I shall fix that. Thanks for the feedback. :)

On another note, here's something I just finished for a remix contest: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3253668/So%20Far%20Away%20%28Final%29.mp3

I am a producer of many genres of electronic music. I have one track on beatport and iTunes but I'm not here to promote that.

My soundcloud contains all of my latest works.

I use FL Studio 10 for nearly everything. I used to use Reason but I got fed up with the interface and wanted to get my ideas down in the fastest time possible.

Please enjoy my works.

Just got Rhytmik Rock Edition from the Dsiware store today.
And god is that software so easy and fun to use!

I just started playing around with it, and I've been working on my first tune.
(Man, I wish I was better at music as a kid. Always have to try and do things by ear. No shortcuts for this fellow! XD)

Here's the current W.I.P:

Its not brilliant but it has that Retro charm I like.
(Sounds like something out of Doom or Blood)

Don't have the right cable yet, so I had to record this through my webcam microphone and boost the volume, so it sound quality is pretty poor.
(Sorry audiophiles)

EDIT: here it is!
Es finito! :D

Been a while since I posted something here, but...I've been working on a film score lately...

For an Indie Film Project called "10" http://www.indiegogo.com/10-A-student-short-film

Having to develop at least 30 mins of material, so...I thought I'd share some of it with you guys. :)

Here's another track, probably for the opening: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3253668/Who%20Am%20I%20wip%20%232.mp3

Thanks for listening. :)
