I'd love to hear Aerith's theme -the orchestral version. I've seen some youtube videos with just the piano part, but I'd love to hear it with the full orchestra. It's a tear jerker.

I think there's rather a lot of Final Fantasy in the show right now, but if you track down 20020220 Music from Final Fantasy you can hear it played live.

You can also get it if you have recordings of Tour de Japon - Music from Final Fantasy, More Friends - Music from Final Fantasy, Dear Friends - Music from Final Fantasy, or even Final Fantasy VII Reunion Tracks.

Though I believe on Reunion it was studio recording rather than a proper live show. Mind you, with an ensemble as big as an orchestra I suppose there's not much difference aside from editing out page turning and no applause at the end.

That's quite right. I was under the impression that he was looking for a full orchestral recording, not a live performance recording; if not, then that's my fault.

Well, there are some pro's and con's for Final Fantasy music in Video Games Live!. Yes, they play songs from them - One Winged Angel, Aerith's Theme, Liberi Fatali - but since Sqaure Enix does not allow any concert except for purely Final Fantasy concerts to use images or videos from the games, when the songs are played they are usually just the orchestra with a light show. However, because Kingdom Hearts is also associated with Sqaure Enix, I have seen them use Disney related media for it - but like before we don't get to see Sora, Riku, or Kairi or any of the other Final Fantasy characters in it.

Like it's been hashed out in a topic a lot (which you probably already know), this is very true that SE has denied video sequences from either Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, and that yes, for the Kingdom Hearts sequence, VGL uses a montage of Disney movie clips (the exception was the 2005 VGL Concert in LA--the only time they actually showed Kingdom Hearts clips from the game).

My question, actually, is how did Tommy and Jack get their hands on the licenses to perform One Winged Angel or Liberi Fatali? I don't know if Tommy or Jack frequents this section of the board, but if so, I would definitely be interested in knowing how they obtained those rights.

You guys forgot about the Distant Worlds CD. That has an orchestral Aerith's Theme as well (studio, not live). Got my copy today - it's quite good. The entirety of Maria and Draco was sweet. Pity there's no Dancing Mad, though.

If you want a live performance, the Distant Worlds tour will be at the Rosemont Theatre (aka US Game Music Concert Central) in Chicago on March 1st.

Yeah, I knew someone was gonna bring this up. Frankly, I didn't put it in my list because, well, because I just forgot about it until a day after I made my post, and I was too lazy to go edit it. Sorry.

As for Distant Worlds, it really needs to come West. I'm still unsure as to why many of the video game concerts appear at Chicago and the Rosemont Theater.

YEAH! That's it! I knew there had to be some kind of connection. That totally makes sense.

Not speaking with any knowledge of exactly what they did, but its possible that Jack and Tommy went to Nobuo himself to get permission to use the music, now that he's left SE to form his own company. Whether he still has owners rights over the music, I've no idea, but its possible they went that route rather than through SE...

I could be wrong though...

I would presume that Myrph is right on this.

He's been freelance for several years now, and I think he retained ownership of his past works.

Terraguy

Well, the only problem I see with that is that companies usually also retain partial ownership of all of the content in the game, which probably includes music. Therefore, it might be a joint agreement for licensing, I guess.

Yeah, but if they've already got permission from Nobuo, they can use that as leverage against Squeenix, since its technically his music...

Jack or Tommy are welcome to step in anytime now to let us know how they did it ;p

From what I recall, Square-Enix originally attemtped to strip all content from VGL. Disney stepped in and allowed the use of Kingdom Hearts music, as they had control through the soundtrack release. Rather ironic that Disney is the company willing to let something out in this case, don't ya think?

My guess is Square-Enix and Uematsu-san have shared rights. A corporation build on entertainment is nothing without its intellectual properties, but music is recognized as an art form, giving the artist certain rights.
